Viganj

Viganj is a small town located in the southwest part of the Pelješac peninsula, 7 km from the town of Orebić, a 15-minute boat ride from the ancient town of Korčula and 128 km from the beautiful town of Dubrovnik. The town lies in a quiet and peaceful, natural ambiance, were there aren’t too many cars, discotheques and coffee shops. The vicinity of beautiful towns and sights will make your stay in Viganj full of interesting experiences and the fact that it is located away from the crowd of people will make sure you have a peaceful and relaxing holiday.

Only a few minute ride away from the Mirina Boarding House you will find an 8000-year-old town of Nakovana, one of the oldest towns on Pelješac. On your way towards Nakovana you can see the fossil shells or the Illiyrian shrine, the old settlement and small churches, all in the very town of Nakovana.
A mild and warm climate with more than 260 sunny days a year makes Viganj an ideal tourist destination.
Here you can experience the atmosphere of a genuine Mediterranean town, while taking a walk along the winding coastline passing between beautiful beaches and houses built in the authentic Mediterranean style, surrounded by blossoming gardens.
The town of Viganj, which was inhabited way back in the prehistoric and Roman period, served as a harbour in which the seamen found salvation from the raging storms and, according to a Hellenic legend, it was  also the place were Ulysses anchored his galley.
If you think of Viganj as a town which can offer you only the sea, sun, nature and friendly hosts, you are wrong.

Alongside those respecting and taking care of nature and the environment, the type of tourists you will run into most often while in Viganj are the sportsmen, both the professional and the recreational ones. However, apart from being one of two most attractive windsurfing destinations in Croatia, Viganj has much more to offer. Excursions to St. Ilija's hill (961 m), paragliding, hunting or simply enjoying the intact nature and fresh air are only some of them. Goat trails, pastures and the rocky terrain are ideal for extreme cycling and rock climbing. In case you want to learn how to surf or dive, the schools of windsurfing and diving will certainly fulfill your needs.
As we have already mentioned, Viganj is a well-known European windsurfing and paragliding destination. Since it is located in the middle of a narrow channel between Korčula and Pelješac, in the foot of St. Ilija's mountain, the wind blowing here is several times faster than other Adriatic winds. For example, the usual strength of the mistral wind (Cro. maestral) is on the fifth place on the Beaufort scale but it can reach number 8 as well. It is no wonder then that the World Championship in Windsurfing was held in the very town of Viganj in 1989. The following year Viganj also hosted the European Championship. Every year the town welcomes the Croatian Open Windsurfing Championship. We invite all surfers, families and fans of intact nature to come to Viganj. It is one of those places you simply must visit!
